A reverse periodisation week puts roughly 65% of training time easy, 20% moderate and 15% hard. The percentages are of time, not of sessions — which is why a week with two hard sessions in it can still be 65% easy.

How it plans
Do the short, sharp work when the weather and the daylight are against long sessions.
Grow session duration as the race approaches, converting speed into endurance rather than the other way round.

Why it is meant to work
Traditional periodisation builds volume first and adds intensity as the race approaches. Reverse periodisation does the opposite, and the argument for it is mostly practical: in a northern winter the long outdoor sessions are the ones that are hard to do, and the short sharp ones are the ones a trainer or a pool can deliver.
The secondary argument is that race-specific intensity held year-round prevents the loss of top-end fitness that a long pure base block causes, so less time is spent regaining it later.
It is a scheduling argument rather than a physiological one. That is not a criticism — a plan an athlete can actually complete in February beats a better plan they abandon — but it should not be mistaken for a claim about adaptation.
Who it suits, and how it fails
Suits
Northern winters, early-season races, and athletes who can only train long at weekends in good weather.
Watch out for
Front-loads the hardest work into the time of year with the least recovery and the least daylight. Needs a real easy week every third or fourth or it unravels in February.
Strength of evidence
A scheduling argument more than a physiological one: the ordering suits the calendar rather than a known adaptation sequence. Comparisons with traditional periodisation are largely inconclusive.
